Recently, my wife, Alecia, and I enjoyed a “movie night.” I was feeling generous, so I let her choose the movie.

1- Freedom At Home starts with letting your wife believe she won!

She chose “The Nanny Diaries.” Now I have to admit that would not have been my choice but I figured it was starring Scarlet Johanson, so it couldn’t be a complete loss.

2- Freedom At Home is achieved when you agree the movie was great, if she liked it.

In the opening scenes we have a college graduate, Annie, going for a job interview. The interviewer asked her to tell her about herself, who she was. Easy enough- Right? Wrong! She couldn’t spit out a single phrase that defined who she was.

It occurred to me that many people can identify with Annie; we have no idea who we are. We spend all of our lives getting to know all these people around us… our spouses, our children, our co-workers, our friends and so on and so on. But do we really know who we are? Do we really know that man or woman in the mirror?

3- Freedom At Home requires that we know “who we are”. Part of this description has to answer the question “what do I want?”

Cut back to the movie. After Annie has her interview melt-down, she begins on a journey to discover herself. She ends up taking a job as a nanny. She leaves home, filled with excitement and apprehension about her exploration. Riding down the highway with her friend, convertible top down, hair blowing and stereo blasting, she is singing along “Freedom, Freedom, Freedom!”

It was quite an exciting scene. Was she truly free? Of course she was. But she was also free before she made the choice to step out of the predictable path and step onto the less predictable path. It was just when she made the choice to exercise her freedom that she truly “felt” free.

4- Freedom At Home requires a “dream” then a “decision” and then “action”.

I know that feeling all too well. I lived life on the predictable path for a long time. Walking away was probably the most frightening thing I have ever done. But it was the most “freeing” thing I have ever done. And, oh yeah, I have gotten to know a person much better in the process. That person is me.

5- Freedom At Home requires taking the first step toward our fear in order to conquer our fear.

6- Working from home and living life on my own terms requires discipline and determination.

7- Working from home requires the belief that the “American Dream” is still alive and well in any economy we might endure.

I am writing this post during the 4th of July week of 2009. A time we as American’s celebrate FREEDOM and INDEPENDENCE!
