Do you own your own cake and don’t you want to eat it too?

I have always thought the statement “having your cake and eating it too” is completely obvious. Of course, if you have a piece of cake, you want to eat it. The same applies with your chosen career as a High School Coach or any other Coach.  Here is what I mean:

Coaching young people and being instrumental in molding their lives forever may be one of the most rewarding careers possible. The relationships that you build will last for a lifetime with some of these kids. To this day, I can remember some life principals coaches shared with me.

All four of my children were very good athletes and won many awards over the years with winning teams. We watched as our children shared in their successes with their proud coaches at their sides. To this day, every time we bump into a former coach, they ask about our kids because I truly believe that they love them.

I would compare a coaching career with a giant piece of chocolate cake.

Unfortunately, as you know, High School coaches are overworked, overwhelmed, underpaid and many times under appreciated. I agree with you that our system is not fair. Why would coaches who work so hard and have such a positive impact on our young people be paid such a meager salary? You deserve more! Maybe you could be happy with the low salary because you love coaching so much, and for that I truly admire you. However, your spouse and children may not share this same sacrificial commitment to your career.

According to Steven K. Scott, author of “The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived”, 95% of Americans who retire at the age of 65, do not have the financial means to support himself or herself without government assistance or help from family and friends. Do High School coaches fit in the 5% (the haves) or the 95% (the have nots)?

Imagine this, if you will…You have taken a coaching position in a school and you have just gotten settled in. The moving expense was more that you expected, the car is not running just right, and the tires really need to be replaced. You were already in debt from the last school you left and now you are starting over.

I know what you are thinking…I surely HOPE I have a winning season!
