You didn’t plan to be here, but here you are. Your plans were to work a few more years at your current job or career and then retire.

You began to hear the news in late 2006 that something wasn’t just right in the housing market. You began to hear terms like sub-prime loans, adjust rate mortgages, and interest only loans, and if you were like most people, when you began to hear this, you didn’t think it had much to do with you. Then day in and day out you heard more and more as the story unfolded, and before long, you realized it was going to affect you. In fact, it has affected all of us in ways we never would have imagined!

Suddenly your life is upside down. After years of a booming real estate market, which in fact drove our whole economy, things were not only slowing down, they were coming to a screeching Holt! You began to see report after report of foreclosures going higher and higher and then it happened; the real trouble began when Banks stopped lending money.

There were many things behind the scenes that were going on as well, but when the Banks stopped lending, this Nation was brought to it’s knees!

You began to see friends loose their jobs, not one by one, but rather in large numbers. Then it was your turn… you got the pink slip, and the thoughts that went through your mind.

  1. How will I, a ____ year old person, with little or no training, other than what I have been doing for years, find a new job?
  2. With so many other people competing for so the same job, will I be chosen?
  3. How can I tell my wife that the home we have invested $__________ into over the last few years will be gone if I can’t find a job?
  4. Will I have to dip into my 401K nest egg that has taken years to accumulate? How long can I survive on it?
  5. Did I make a mistake listening to my parents, who told me to get an education and work hard?
  6. Will my children learn from me and end up like this or will I be able to show them a better way?
  7. Did I not educate myself by reading and hearing what people like Robert Kiyosaki said “own your own company and invest in it”?
  8. Will I start over in Corporate America or will I learn from the past and do what countless others are doing for themselves?
  9. Will I realize that if other people can do it, so can I?

Enough questions for now and I am sure you have asked yourself all of these questions. The thing is, do you realize that there is no such thing as FAILURE, only FEEDBACK!

It is not too late to start over, but here is the big question. Will you do what is “insane” and do the same thing again, with the same results, or will you think outside of the box and realize there is a better way?

Let me take a break here and share with you part of a chapter from Bill O’Reilly’s latest book “A Bold Fresh Piece of Humanity”. Chapter two is entitled “SELF-RELIANCE” (quite a fitting phrase for our subject matter above) and he has a sub-title in this chapter called “Watch and Learn”.

Bill explains one of the reasons why he has become a “self-reliant” person, and it stems from watching his father give his life to a company called Caltex oil company. Bill told about how his father went to a “JOB” every day that he hated. He was an accountant (also referred to as a bean counter) and he was never challenged.

He shared, on his deathbed, that after a while, the slow drip, drip, drip, of daily boredom drove him crazy. Every day he would get up and go to a “JOB” he hated. Can you imagine living that kind of life?

Bill said his father “did not seek a better alternative because of FEAR. Being raised during the Great Depression, when jobs were scarce and despair was in the air, caused him and many others to believe that economic doom was always hiding in the closet, just waiting to pounce. So as long as his meager paycheck kept coming, he would tough it out and not look for something better”.

Bill vowed that he was going to “make money and forge a career on his own terms. No fear”. Bill said that his father had a college education and he did work hard, but many times, that’s not enough. He explained that his father never took a CHANCE.

Bill says that if you take one thing away from his book, it would be this: “Design your own life. Never give up trying to make it on your own. Get back up when you get slapped down, and don’t wast time buying into ideological nonsense. Expect-and accept-nothing from anyone else. Do it yourself”.

WOW! I am so glad I read that book, if for nothing else, that one chapter was worth the reading.

How many people do you think have lived a life of regret because they never took a chance. And of all those people, how many never took a chance because of FEAR? Do you realize that FEAR is the number one driving emotion in most human beings? It is FEAR that immobilizes us.

Watch this quick video to see how taking your first step toward FEAR can result in a great accomplishment.
